About Us

We are a class of 29 Year 7 & 8 students at Taradale Intermediate School, Taradale, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.  Taradale is a small town with a population of approximately 18,000.  We are a 10 minute drive from Napier as well as a 10 minute drive to the beach.

While talking about what makes us us, we realised that, as kiwis, we have our own lingo.  Brooke did some research to create an A to Z of kiwi slang and selected what she felt are the most popular and relevant colloquialisms.

For much of the alphabet, there were several words or phrases that could've been chosen.  What other 'kiwi language' can you think of?
Add your favourite kiwi speak in the comments section below.

Okay, Room 24, this page is up to you.

What would you like to share about us and where we come from?

Spend some time considering what makes us us and what's unique about where we come from.  Chat to each other, your families and friends and we'll go from there.

What images will we use?  Are there any web tools that can help us do this creatively?

  1. Hi room 24 something that us typical Kiwis enjoy celerbrating is Christmas!!! and the way we do it is by...... having fish and chips on the beach, a BBQ,a refreshing swim or simply just wearing our favourite comfortable jandals is just something we love doing.
Another thing we appreciate is our amazing birds the kiwi, once apon a time kiwis could fly and had short beaks but over time the have changed completely and now they are like our friends, like our simbol.

    Yours Sincerely

    1. Hi Briney

You've highlighted some great 'Kiwi icons' that many Kiwis love to experience during our Christmas holidays. It must seem strange for people in the Northern Hemisphere to imagine a summer Christmas! Did you know students in the UK, the USA, and Europe have their summer holidays in the middle of the year and their school year begins in July/September. That means when we are starting our school year, they are half way through theirs.

Our next step on our "About Us" page of our blog is to find some great pictures of items you've mentioned and post them on here. It'd also be useful to add some information about our wonderful bird, the Kiwi.

    2. Briney,
You might also have to explain what 'jandals' are?

  3. Hi there room 24, Ashleigh here!
Some really typical kiwiana things are summers, kiwis, christmas, bbq's and loads more! Those are things that make us us. Also I think it would be important to include something about our maori culture as I think other students would be interested in learning about this. For our images we could make like a collage type thing of all things kiwiana. I hope you all like my ideas!

    Yours sincerely
    Ashleigh!

    1. Hi Ashleigh

Thanks for your good ideas! You have a really valid point with your maori culture suggestion; it's great that you thought of something no-one else has yet. The collage idea could be a fun way of combining the kiwiana images - have you ever used Microsoft Auto Collage? Perhaps we could make a quiz to go with the collage such as see how many items you know? Or, we could have a quiz with Kiwi colloquialisms.

  4. Hi Room 24

I think that we should set a class goal to achieve by the end of the year. We could also share about our chits and how they work around our school.
I also have a class motto that I think suits us and we could share it on our page. It's "If we cannot find the road to success, we will make one". I believe that this motto represents our class as we try our best in all that we do!

    1. Hey Brooke

I think that a class goal is a really good idea. I also like your motto very much: If we cannot find the road to success, we will make one... THAT'S SO COOL! What do you think our goal should be? I have no idea!

      Talk to you soon

  5. Hey fellow classmates

Well done for making this awesome kiwi slang poster! I think that it's really well done. Just out of interest, what do you guys think the most common kiwi slang word is?

I'm happy Miss McLeod has asked us to do the Napier information because people that don't know Napier very well can find out about where we are from.

    Bye for now

  6. Hello Room 24, we at Huzzah! have been really happy to get your comments. I am glad I tracked you down. Kate left a lovely compliment for us in her recent comment. I see you have learned a great deal about blogging already.
One really important piece of advice: it is REALLY critical to leave your blog url (address) EXACTLY right or people can't come back to you to comment on your blog. I had to do a lot of digging to find this site because the link Kate left did not work. (I'm glad I did!) This was true for a previous comment. I have fixed the link now.
Best wishes to you all, happy blogging!

    1. Hi Jan

Thanks for your lovely replies to my students on your blog and for your comment here. The blog url error was the teacher's - the mistake was the omission of a . between 24tis and blogspot.com.

      Kind regards
