Guest Post by Ashleigh - Friday Enrichment Progammes

Friday enrichment programmes are a great way to do something that you love, out of class. At the beginning of Term One we got a list of all the Friday programmes which included Culinary Arts, Extension Art, Performers group, Funky garden art, Take 2 – (learning digital ICT skills), Media team – (creating the school magazine), Sewing, Kapa Haka, and Enviro Leaders.
Then you had to write an application explaining why you think you would be a good student to have in the programme you want to be a part of. If you wanted to you could get a letter of recommendation from your parents and teacher. In some activities there were stages that you had to get shortlisted for. For Culinary Arts you had to cook or bake something. For Extension Art you had to sketch a scene from Aladdin (which is our school production coming up this year). Fortunately I made it in to Culinary Arts which is really exciting for me. We get to cater for meetings, make home-made pasta, bake macaroons and participate in lots of other activities.
I think having Friday enrichment programmes is an awesome idea as you can try something different and learn new skills.

Does your school have any extra activities for the students to participate in?
If so what are they?

  1. Dear room 24,

I would love to do most of the activities that you were doing but at the school that I go to we do not do that which is so unfair so take the chance and enjoy!

    1. Hi there

I don’t do a special programme but I do an enrichment programme on Fridays. Unlike special programmes, you don’t need to apply for enrichment programmes. Out of the choices given, you pick your top four choices and then get placed in a group. However, that doesn’t mean you get your top option, it is just an indicator for the teacher in charge of organising the groups for enrichment programmes. I participate in picture books, which involves looking at what makes a good picture book and creating our own books in pairs or on our own.

  2. Dear Ashley,
Congratulations on making it into the culinary art enrichment class. I think you will make a great chef after this class. what is your favorite thing to make? Do you like to cook or to bake? At our school, we don't have a cooking class, but we do have other enrichment programs such as art, chess club, and different kind of sports. I don't take any enrichment classes at my school, but I do many classes on my own after school, such as gymnastics, piano, and violin.

Sarah (Mrs. Yollis' Class in USA)

P.S. Thank you for listing my sister Miriam's and my blog on your blog list.

    1. Dear Sarah,

Thank you so much for your comment on my blog post.

My favourite dish to cook is probably paella. It is a Spanish dish which includes a special type of rice, either seafood or chicken, paprika - a type of seasoning, red peppers and lots of other yummy ingredients. I enjoy cooking this as it is very methodical and involves a variety of different cooking techniques.

Do you cook meals for your family? Do you enjoy cooking?

For me I probably prefer to bake rather than cook. I enjoy baking because I prefer sweet food over savory.
With baking you have to follow the recipe exactly and be very methodical. I do like to cook also as you don't have to follow the recipe exactly and you can through in your own flavourings and ingredients.

You are obviously quite a musical person seeing as you play the piano and violin. I play the guitar but I would love to know how to play the piano properly.

Once again Thank you for your comment. I really hope that we can keep in touch.

    2. Dear Ashleigh,

Thank you for responding back to me. I don't cook meals for my family. My dad is the chef in our family. He makes chicken, soups, fish, and grills meet on the barbeque. I also like to bake with my mom. I have never cooked or baked anything on my own. Who taught you how to cook and bake?

My little brother also wants to play the guitar, but my mom wants him to learn the piano first. He doesn't practice very much on the piano and he still doesn't know all his notes.

      Sincerely,
      Sarah

P.S. What grade are you in?

    3. Hi Sarah,

Thank you so much for replying to my comment!

Obviously I am learning lots of new cooking techniques in culinary arts but I probably learnt most of the stuff I know about cooking and baking from my Grandma. I used to do a lot of baking with her but I am now starting to cook meals for her.

What baking skills have you learnt baking with your Mum? What is your favourite thing to bake?

I have a little brother too who is four. He is not quite hold enough to learn an instrument yet but I think when he is a little bit older he will want to learn the guitar. He has his own toy guitar which he loves to play with.

In New Zealand we don’t have grades. We have years which are similar to grades. I am in Year 8 which is age 12-13.

      How old are you?

I hope that we can keep in touch.

      From your blogging buddy,
      Ashleigh!

    4. Dear Ashleigh,

Thank you so much for replying to my comment. My grandma also bakes and cooks with me, but I can never remember the order of the ingredients. I love going over to her house and watching her prepare food. My older sister Miriam learned to make rice with chicken. Once she cooked our whole dinner. She is 10 years old. I don't really know what my favorite thing to bake is. I like to bake cookies, banana bread, and pumpkin bread. I can't yet use the stove by myself which makes it hard to cook anything. I am also really busy during the school year, and I don't have much time to watch my dad cook at home.

I will be starting 4th grade in one week, and I am 8 years old.

What else do you like to do besides cook?

      Sincerely,
      Sarah

    5. Hi Sarah,
Thank you so much for responding to me. Other things that I enjoy to do is spend time with my friends and family. I also like art, reading and blogging of course!. I have just started up my own student blog which I am really excited about.

Do any students in your class have their own student blog? Do you have your own blog?

What are you busy doing during the school year?

Most of our school is quite busy at the moment preparing and rehearsing for our school production which is happening at the end of the term. We are doing the musical Aladdin. We have rehearsals nearly every weekend and every lunch time at school. I am really enjoying it but sometimes it can get a bit tiring. I am sure the end result will be great though!

I hope we can keep in touch.

  3. Hello Ashleigh,

I just stumbled up on this blog post and was impressed by the communications you have had via comments. One thing we learn in blogging is our posts aren't limited to our computer. They can open us up to the world. There are many interesting people in the world interested in what we have to say. We know this when we see comments flow in. :)

Keep up the blogging. The world awaits.

    1. Hi Ross,

Thank you so much for your comment on my blog post!

I agree that blogging is fantastic. I think this because it is a different and exciting way to communicate with other people around the world. I have only just started blogging this year and so far I am really enjoying it!

How long have you blogged for?

Once again thank you for your comment on my blog. I hope we can keep in touch.

      Yours sincerely,
      Ashleigh

    2. Hello again, Ashleigh.

Since starting blogging, I have been in contact with class and student blogs on every continent of the world, with the exception of Antarctica. Of course, there aren't any schools down there. :)

My blogging journey only started about the middle of 2011. I saw some blogs and wanted to leave a comment but found I needed to join a blog provider. With prompts to start my own blog, I took the plunge and now have six, although only two are frequently used.

My computing journey started back in 1975 when I was in university. I first used them in classes in 1981 ans used the internet with classes around 1990. Blogging is the more recent step in my learning journey with technology. :)

      Keep blogging.

    1. Hello Ashleigh,

My most active and visited blog is one entitled "Extended Comments for Students". I use it when a comment for a class or student blog becomes too long or I want to include audio, video or photos. Here is a link...
      http://rossmannellcomments.edublogs.org/

The second most visited blog is one where I share short stories and write for challenges. It has had over 8,000 visits since being set up.
Another is for posts more relating to my local area. It only has three posts at this time because my other blogs and blog commenting takes up much time.
Of the remaining blogs, they are basic but were established with different groups so I could have access to student blogs for commenting. In time they will have their own purpose.
