Subway Softball

School has started for the year and even though we’re only into the second week our first inter-class sports’ competition has started.
Our first competition is Subway Softball. You can see some pictures above of our class trialling and practising to get ready for our first game tomorrow.
We call this sport Subway Softball because if your team is the overall winner, you and your class receive prize money to buy Subway for lunch. Subway Softball is played in three pools. There are 12 students to a team and each team represents a class.

Do you have inter-class sports competitions at your school?  If so, what are they?
Does your school have house/team/syndicate competitions?
Are there any original or unique games that are played at your school?

  1. Miss T - We have an Inter School Competition but in Touch in Term One, because that's the first Sport that we play in Hamilton (or the Waikato Sport that's played first) we don't play Softball until Term Four and we don't have a class competition just a Inter School one. I really like the idea of Subway Softball. I think its a really good way to get the students involved and I am sure the winning class would be very happy with the prize.

    1. Dear Mr Webb and Room 5

Thanks for posting on our blog. We play interschool touch in Winter, but not as a class competition.
As well as Subway Softball we have Fish 'n' Chip Footie and Heavenly Netball. This year we have a new game called Quicket. This game is a fun and active game. You hit the ball as far as you can and try getting a 1,2,3 or 4 by batting it out to that zone. There is eight to a team.

  2. Good luck with your softball competition Room 24!

Our school has interclass sports games. At the moment the students are getting ready to play nuke'em ball which is a little bit like volleyball except students throw and catch the ball to each other.

Thank you for commenting on our blog. Our class is getting really excited about Subway Softball and competitive as well. Unfortunately we lost our first game 9-2 but getting ready for the next one. We're really interested in the game Nuke'em Ball and I'd love to play it someday.
Good luck with your interclass games.

  3. Hi Room 24 - I am the DP at a small Hamilton Primary school and we are about to have a tabloids day this week with interclass tug-o-war! The children have all been practicing this week and working on their techniques - we can't wait to see how much fun everyone has! Good luck with your softball competition. And enjoy the challenge ahead.

Thank you so much for commenting on our blog. Unfortunatley we did not win our first game but we will keep trying! Your tabloids day sounds really fun! We have a tabloids day once a year but not until term 4, we don't get to do tug-o-war though! I hope you have lots of fun on your tabloids day.

    2. Hi I'm from Texas and we have a lot of school sports. First when we have to select our courses for the school year we either pick P.E., off season, or athletic which I am in. In off season you would miss first or seventh period so that you can go to a gym or something to do a sport that is not included in a sport that you can do at school. P.E. is where you do stuff like dodgeball and fun stuff like that. In athletics we do sports like volleyball, basketball, cross country, and track and field. I personally am in volleyball which is a cut sport, basketball which is also cut sport and I'm trying out for track and field. I hope I make it bye.-Elizabeth

Thanks for commenting on our class blog. We also play a lot of sport; I really enjoy playing hockey. Also does cut sport mean to try out for that sport? In our P.E at the moment we are practicing playing softball because we are having a school competition where we face other classes in the school.

  6. Hey, we do stuff like athletics in the morning which is sports for an hour... We don't have any special sports...

And do y'all have like 7 class periods a day? Cuz we do and they are 55 min each

    1. Dear Coleyville student

In NZ we have 3 periods except we call them blocks. Block 1 is 2 hours 15 minutes long, block 2 is 1 hour 30 minutes long, block 3 is 2 hours 5 minutes long.

Athletics every morning sounds like a lot of fun because I'm quite sporty. How about you?
How long do you go to school for?

    1. Hi Jaxson

Our competition, Subway Softball, has started. We have lost two games and won one game. We also have Quicket which is quick cricket. You have four zones; zone one is worth 1 point, zone two is worth 2 points, zone three is worth 3 points and beyond zone three is 4 points.

What colours are your houses? Our house (learning team), Kaweka, is yellow. Mohaka is green and Takitimu is blue. Did your class win Flippa Ball?

  16. Hey! Here is Lukas from IST Toulouse in France.
We don't have any inter-class sports competitions but i think this is a very good idea. We don't have any team competitions but i think that could be a amazing idea to do that in our school.

What are the rules of subway softball?

    Hello from Toulouse,
My school has yet to have introduced inter school house competitions, but I for one would love to see something similar occurring here. Do these competitions occur on a annual basis, or do they continue throughout the school year? If so, do they comprise of multiple activities?
Good luck with the Subway Softball!

Thanks for commenting on our blog. The softball game is really fun and cool for the whole class.

Thanks for the good luck we needed it. Subway softball was fun but we didn't win any of our games. As for Quicket it is fun and we've had 1 game so far and we lost but we still get to play because the first game didn’t count for much.

  20. Hello,
My name is Enrique, I'm a student from the Toulouse International School in France. I read about your inter-class competitions and they seem very fun. I would like to know how to start and organise it . Competitions like the ones in your school could be very good experiences for our school.

In our school we do something similar, but it only lasts a day. We mix the students from different year groups into teams and we play sports.

P.S How big are your school houses?

    1. Dear Enrique

Thank you for your comment on our blog. At our school we have student leaders that help organise the competitions and other sporting activities and we also have a few teachers that mainly do the organising.

Do you have different houses at your school? We have 5 class rooms in each learning house so that is about 150 kids.

What kind of sports do you play when you have the sports day?

    2. Hello Enrique

Our school has over 450 pupils and about 150 in each learning team. Our class (room 24) is in Kaweka. The other two teams are Mohaka and Takitimu. Kaweka's team colour is yellow, Takitimu is blue and Mohaka is green. They are all of my favourite colours! Our school colours are red, white and black. What are your school colours?
If you want to start organising class competitions you could talk to your principal and suggest class competitions like softball, netball, cricket, and basketball. It's lots of fun!
